“Before Disney, there was Citrus…
From riding dirt bikes through the Orange groves as a kid to reaching and picking a delicious orange off of a tree in our backyard, citrus was just always there. From the higher points in Central Florida you could see miles and miles of orange groves. As a kid visiting the Citrus Tower, a favorite local attraction, you could see these never-ending groves and be amazed by the dominance of this crop. Truly the love of citrus – the pleasure of picking a fresh orange or tangerine to eat or getting fresh-squeezed juice in the morning – was just a part of our lives we assumed would never change. However with back-to-back freezes in the 1980’s the industry ground to a halt, with most of the 117,000 acres of citrus groves in Lake county alone, wiped out. Just when it seemed things were rebounding a blight started spreading throughout groves both in Florida and California. Sadly the citrus industry is a mere shadow of what it was, but these logos beckon back to a time when Citrus was King and was THE industry in Florida.”
